Guided Reading Resources

“Guided reading is a teaching approach designed to help individual students learn how to process a variety of increasingly challenging texts with understanding and fluency.” -Fountas and Pinnell

Jackson County Public Schools uses Guided Reading groups as the primary focus of reading instruction for kindergarten through fifth grade.

All JCPS students in grades kindergarten through third will receive a minimum of 90 minutes of reading instruction daily.  Per general statute, students not demonstrating proficiency past third grade must also receive 90 minutes of reading instruction daily from a highly qualified teacher.

Guided Reading includes many components, including a whole group mini lesson focused on grade level standards, and numerous small guided reading groups focused on specific interventions, strategies, or enrichments for a group of readers.
